Haagen-Dazs Pomegranate Dark Chocolate, All Natural Ice Cream bars

Ok, generally, the items reviewed on this site are skewed towards nutrition and health, but in this case we made an exception for delicious taste. A friend, knowing my penchant for pomegranates (not to mention dark chocolate), brought over a package of Haagen-Dazs Pomegranate Dark Chocolate ice cream bars. We rapidly proceeded to sample the product, and both agreed the bars were a real hit. I was a little surprised at the idea of pomegranate and dark chocolate together, but this worked really well. The pomegranate added a little tartness that complimented the dark chocolate. As I mentioned in a taste test for POM Wonderful pomegranate juice, pomegranate does have some of the tannin characteristics of red wine, and red wine and dark chocolate are also an interesting combination.

Haagen-Dazs Pomegranate Dark Chocolate

The idea of pomegranate and dark chocolate in combination is interesting, as both are high in anti-oxidants as measured by the ORAC score. Of course it is a bit of a rationalization to presume this makes this dessert healthy, but, hey, you only live once! If you are going to splurge, and we all do sometimes, do it in style, and gain something (in this case potentially anti-oxidants).

A brief word on the ingredients: pomegranate juice concentrate was listed after cream, skim milk and sugar. So clearly there is some reasonable amount of pomegranate in the ice cream. Interestingly, a few ingredients later, elderberry juice concentrate is listed. Interesting, too, this ice cream bar has less sugar than an 8 oz glass of pomegranate juice! Unfortunately it has much more fat and calories.
